"Addicted to the Flavor of Food"

If you are a scientist that goes by what the scientific publications tell you to, or you have ever done a search to see how to treat your “addiction to the flavor of food,” then as far as you can tell, there is no such thing. So, if it doesn’t exist then you clearly don’t have a problem, right? If you continue to make that assessment, then there will never be a way to treat it.

The horrible thing about extreme weight gain or weight loss is that either will cause mild to major depression depending on one’s tolerance level. Depression will then cause that person to eat more or eat less to ease the depression and so the cycle begins. A cycle is a circle that has no end until you make a clear break in it. Therefore, that is what I had to do.

I have a saying that I live by, “Make educated decisions based on educated thought.” An emotional decision based on emotional thought is OK for those things that require it, but it throws most forms of logic right out the door.

Food Addiction - Glenn's Eating Disorder StoriesTherefore, in order for me to break the circle in my addiction to the flavor of food, I had to take one of the issues that was in the circle and treat it first. Not take everything and handle a little of each. That may cause the circle to be smaller but it is still a circle. So I took what I thought to be the root of the problem, the one that science says does not exist... my "Food Addiction.”

The problem with being addicted to food is that you cannot live without it. It is not like beer, cigarettes, or drugs where your body does not require it. You have to have it in order to live!

So, here was my solution and I used a bit of science to help out as well. “Educated decision based on an educated thought.”

A normal person requires about 10 times their body weight, in calorie count if they sit around and do nothing all day. More if they are active. 3500 calories equals 1 pound of body weight, so if you drop 500 calories per day for a weeks, you lose 1 pound every week. Simple basic math and it works like a charm! I went under by 1000 per day until I got down to 220lbs and then went to 500 under from there. So 2 lbs per week for a while and then 1 pound per week, safe and effective.

How did I handle the addiction to the flavor of food?

Addicted to the flavor of food - Glenn's eating disorder storyFirst, I said, “What flavors in the fruit category do I like enough to crave an addiction and fill my gut?” That was my breakfast along with high fiber cereal.

Second, I said, “what are the veggies that I crave and will do the same?”

Third were the meats, and so on and so forth.

Divide those up into 5 little meals so that I can eat all day and keep the metabolism up, and I had the solution. Some items had hardly anything in them for calories so I could eat them all the time.

I have to say that I am still addicted to the flavor of food and always will be, but with all types of addiction, you have to admit to it, break the circle, and stick to the plan!

Hope this helps someone to get a head start if you are in the same boat as I was.

Being overweight is an eating disorder too. If it’s out of order then it is a disorder.

Food Addiction
by: Wendy L. Sheppard, MSW

You know what, Glenn, eating disorders ARE a food addiction. Thank you for reminding us all that they are.

While your food addiction may not be "officially" characterized as an eating disorder, it IS one, nonetheless.

Thank you for sharing.
