Blogging for Sophia Her Quest for Eating Disorder Treatment
Sophia Benbahmed has been trying to get her insurance to pay for her eating disorder treatment. But they have refused. And so, Blogging for Sophia was born. Bloggers have joined together to raise money for Sophia so she can get the treatment she deserves - the treatment United Behavioral Health (UBH) has refused to pay for.
Eating disorder treatment will cost her a little over $9,000 per week. Sophia is currently in treatment at Monte Nido, where she was in treatment when UBH dropped her coverage. She has appealed the insurance company's decision not to continue covering her eating disorder treatment, and she is hoping to remain in treatment for the duration of that appeal. Sophia's parents do not have the ability to afford to pay for her treatment out of pocket. Sophia's father has been unemployed for nearly two years and her mother had retired prior to her father losing his job. Her father is taking money out of his retirement savings to help pay for treatment, but it doesn't even cover a week of treatment.
Sophia has suffered from an eating disorder for 12 years. She requires long-term inpatient treatment for her eating disorder, and then will require a step-down approach with gradually diminishing levels of treatment. But none of this will happen if she doesn't raise the money to pay for treatment.
Sophia has written her plea here: Sophia's Eating Disorder Treatment Fund. Those of us who are Blogging for Sophia are asking our readers to do what you can to donate to her fund. It's a crime that insurance companies do this to patients. I remember years ago when I was in treatment, every couple of days it was another fight with the insurance company to get a few more days covered. A few more days. That's how tough insurance companies are when it comes to treating eating disorders.
