Chocolate Temptation
For the Love of Chocolate

My story is about my niece. She has (had?) a love of chocolate that she could not satisfy. She would literally hide food, and eat it when no one was around or looking. Or she would make up excuses to go to the store to buy chocolate (candy bars, cup cakes) etc. and sit in her car, and consume the whole package...

She has two small children, so she would constantly have to hide from them to eat her fill of chocolate. Her weight sky-rocketed!

She knew she had a problem, but didn't know what to do about it. Her husband tried to be supportive, but she would sneak and eat it whenever she could.

I'm not really sure what she did to combat this eating disorder, but she seems to have lost some weight recently, so I'm guessing she has a handle on it.

I'm not sure what category this fits in to, but I know that it is (was?) a very real problem for her.

I would have steered her to a wonderful site such as this had I known it existed!

(I'm not totally sure her problem is addressed, so I will tell her anyway).

Eating Disorders are an addiction
by: Wendy Sheppard, MSW

Thank you for posting your story, Carol. From what you've said here, it sounds like your niece is/was having problems with binge eating. Eating disorders are an addiction. It sounds like your niece is/was addicted to chocolate.

The causes of eating disorders are unique to each person. But there is always an underlying emotional issue. Food is the outlet to deal with emotions when there is (seemingly) no other outlet.

I hope your niece gets a chance to look through the site. She is more than welcome to contact me. She can recover, as long as she can identify the underlying issue(s) and deal with it. It's not easy, but recovery from an eating disorder is possible.

Your niece is lucky to have you.
