College days

by Amelia
(USA)

It all started as a diet during my junior year in college...and then turned into an obsession with fat and calories and a refusal to eat anything with any fat. I stopped menstruating and felt cold all the time...yet still I couldn't allow myself to eat more than a tiny amount/day.

Then my body just lost it. I couldn't control it anymore and the binges started. The starve/binge...starve/binge cycle continued until getting married and then conceiving a child. My daughter saved me and started me on the healing process.

Today, I'm the proud mother of 3 children and work very hard to teach my children to love their bodies no matter what, and I feed them healthy food to nourish their bodies and souls and make them strong.

Eating Disorders and College
by: Wendy Sheppard, MSW

Amelia, wow, does your story hit home! Not only have I had so many people sit in my office and tell me how their eating disorder started in college, and not only am I aware that so many young women have eating disorders that start in college, but my own became full blown while I was away at college.

And like you, it wasn't until I got pregnant that I finally started eating again.

It's a hard road back, and sometimes it takes many, many years, even after our kids bring us back to reality. But they are gifts. And I'm so glad you put your health first so you can be there for your children.

They really are miracles, aren't they?
