Somatic Practices for the Treatment of Eating Disorders

Instructor: Jodi Schwartz-Levy

Date: May 14, 2010

The term somatic refers to the subjective bodily experience, as felt from within. Somatic dissociation is therefore when the body is objectified and internal bodily cues are ignored—the foundation of an eating disorder. This training will teach participants how to foster somatic association with their clients, particularly through sensory awareness. Culturally, we are encouraged to have an objectified bodily consciousness, perpetuating an eating disordered mentality; yet, embodiment practices can intervene to help this population have a more subjective and nurturing relationship with their bodies and selves. Research will be provided from the field of somatic/ body-oriented psychology, including the research of the facilitator from her doctoral dissertation on the Somatic Experience of Bulimia Nervosa.

During this program, participants will gain a basic understanding of somatic dissociation and association and its role in the development and perpetuation of eating disorders. They will explore cultural factors that contribute to somatic dissociation and how they can foster a greater internal bodily orientation for themselves and their clients. Additionally, participants will receive an embodied experience of how the bodily realm can be integrated into psychotherapy.

Presenter Jodi Schwartz-Levy, PhD, has her doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Somatic Psychology. Jodi worked at The Renfrew Center for the treatment of eating disorders as a movement, group and individual therapist. Her dissertation, The Somatic Experience of Bulimia Nervosa: A Qualitative Investigation of Embodiment and Regulatory Functions of Binging and Purging examined the role of somatic dissociation as a paramount feature of the eating disordered experience, in which she created a somatic treatment model for this population. Jodi maintains a private practice at The Resiliency Center, a trauma-informed wellness center in Ambler, PA, where she offers embodiment workshops and somatic trainings.
