There are many critical and sometimes deadly effects of eating disorders. Unfortunately, many people who suffer from eating disorders believe they won't experience medical problems or side effects.
There is this "superwoman," invincible kind of feeling - "Nothing can hurt me!" (I only say woman because the majority of those with eating disorders are women, but men with eating disorders are out there too!) When we're in the throws of an eating disorder, we never believe there could be long-term consequences, including death.
"That won't happen to me!"
But the truth is, there can be significant consequences of eating disorders - anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, compulsive overeating .... People do die from complications related to eating disorders. And if you think having an eating disorder isn't a slow means of committing suicide, then think again. I realize that is a very harsh statement, but after years of suffering and years of treating eating disorders, that really is the truth. It is a death wish, even if it didn't intentionally start out as one. You can disagree - and I'd love to hear your thoughts (please also contact me for other eating disorder help, questions or comments). But this is what I believe.
In this section I will deal with the effects of eating disorders, including the medical, physical and psychological consequences of eating disorders. Mental health related disorders (either as a consequence of having an eating disorder or pre- or co-existing) will be dealt with in the Mental Health section. If you need information on the different types of eating disorders, see that section. Signs and symptoms are here. Causes can be found here. For treatment, see this section.
