How Bulimia Nearly Killed Me

This is how bulimia nervosa nearly killed me.

It began when I started dating a lad when I was 20. I told him a few things that happened when I was younger. I was sexually abused from the age of 6 till 15, but never told anyone, just him. The next day I found the police at my door wanting to ask questions in front of my mum and dad. I had to tell them every thing. I decided not to take it further with the police.

That's when it started...just the odd skipping meals. I was not losing enough weight. And then I tried throwing up. I was hooked. At my worst I was doing it 5 times a day.

I went from 7-1/2 stone to 6 stone in 2 weeks. Then I started having medical complications. I lost my eye sight in 1 eye and the colour in the other. My potassium levels were heart attack rate.

I went to see my doctor and told him about what I had been doing. He gave me a blood test. When I got home, my whole body was tingling and I couldn't breathe. I could not move. My doctor sent me straight to hospital.

When the results came back, they said I was at risk of having a heart attack because my potassium level was so low. I was on a drip for a week and was kept in the hospital for a month. When I got out I knew I had to do something.

My doctor came and saw me when I was in hospital. We talked and I agreed to see him every other day and the eating disorder team once a week.

Slowly I began to get better and fell better about my self and began riding my horse again, which I really missed doing because before I went into hospital, I would not have had the energy to do so. My eye sight has come back, but not the colour. They say that will not come back.

My potassium levels often drop and I'm back in hospital on a drip. I am on Slow K for that. I am also on vitamin b12 injections once a day now to.

So put that all together and I wish I never started. And I wish I just talked to the doctor in the first place. I still see him once a week.

I believe my doctor, my mum, dad and my horse saved my life. And bulimia didn't kill me.
