Irregular life AND Eatting disorder

by Balan T.M
(CALICUT,KERALA,IND)

I'm here to share my experience about my irregular life - habits which I think may have lead to an eating disorder.

I'm Jithin, a 20-year-old college student from India. I used to keep up a specific time for eating in my school days. My mom also tried to provide me a balanced diet for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I used to manage the same routine of school breakfast at 8am, lunch at 1pm, some snacks with tea at 4pm and dinner by 8pm in the 1st year of college. But when it came to my 2nd year, my class times had shifted from 12:45pm to 4pm. I had to leave home to get to college by 11am and wouldn't return home until 5pm.

I found it difficult to eat lunch by 11am at home and travel on the bus about 30kms to college. So I simply started to skip lunch and have some snacks at noon. This was when my eating disorder started.

As time passed and my work load increased, I stopped eating altogether.

The only healthy food I consumed in a day was breakfast. Again I got used to this. I even started skipping dinner at home. Spicy fast food items kept in roadside restaurants became my only food for one day.

I can proudly tell you that I can live many days without food now. I don't feel hunger at all and consider the time normally spent eating as a waste.

It is true that my energy level and stamina have gone down. I sleep more these days. I get tired even walking small distances. My body looks thin and my tummy looks large.

I don't know weather I have anorexia symptoms or not. But simply I can live without food.

don't starve

thank you for sharing your story. I felt worried as I read it. It is so hard to tell if you have an ED at all cause you left out many things. Anorexia and all EDs are associated with obsession, but you don't seem to have that. You seem rather indifferent. You should ask yourself, do I want to lose weight, be thinner no matter what? Or do I just not feel like eating? It may be a medical problem, if you just don't feel hungry or it can be stress from school or other things. Since you mentioned that you body is thin and your stomach is large, it may be a lack of proper nutrition that is causing the hints of an ED. A system that may help is to keep in my mind or write down when you have time to eat a healthy meal, because your schedule changes, so you won't be deprived of needed nutrients. Maybe even pack a healthy snack with you as you head out so that you know you have something to eat available. If it is not that you feel strongly about dropping weight and want to be skinnier very much, but just that you don't care to eat and aren't hungry, then you may not need help for anorexia, but should see a doctor to find out if your body is alright. Good luck with all things.

yes u need a doctor
by: joneh

anoroxia is associated with depression and BDD, distorted image of yourself.. if u wish to be skinny all the time and then skipping meal. then it may be anoroxia... if u r not feeling hungry at all and no desire to look skinny, then its your liver, indigestion or gastric problem.

This is anorexia
by: Wendy Sheppard, MSW

Hi Jithin. Thank you for sharing your story and reaching out. I know right now it feels like an accomplishment that you can go days without eating, but eventually your anorexia symptoms will take over and you won't have control over your life anymore. You can't live without food forever. Please get help before the eating disorder takes over your life.
