What are the Mental Health issues associated with Eating Disorders?
Rarely do eating disorders exist without associated mental health issues, especially the longer the disorder continues. Sometimes the mental health problems come before the onset of an ED, and sometimes they are the result.
Because an eating disorder is about control, it's natural that someone with an ED will feel anxious about either being out of control or becoming out of control.
Eating disorders are also about obsession. Those obsessions can permeate other areas of life, leading to obsessive disorders.
An eating disorder is an addiction. People who suffer from one addiction tend to be predisposed to developing other addictions.
Below you will find more detailed information on the mental health issues associated with eating disorders. Just because these conditions are mentioned, does not mean that everyone with an ED will develop one or all of these conditions. It also does not mean that whether or not an ED was present, the person would have suffered from these mental illnesses.
