The side effects of bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders can be serious ... including death. The problem is that bulimics don't believe they will have any bulimia side effects. That just is not the case ... ever!
Probably one big tell-tail sign of the effects of bulimia is brittle, dry hair. Once formerly silky hair looks dry and broken. Like it's frizzy. This is partly due to dehydration, and also partly due to the lack of nutrients - especially if as a bulimic you are barely eating any food that you don't throw up.
One of the other effects of bulimia nervosa is chipmunk cheeks. Shown here to the left - you can see the puffy cheeks. Characteristic of babies (as this toddler shows in the photograph), teens with eating disorders and adults show the same kind of puffiness due to excessive purging.
Side Effects of Bulimia
The major side effects include problems in the digestive tract. You screw up your ability to digest food properly if you have an eating disorder long enough. Vomiting also causes electrolyte imbalances that can cause you to feel dizzy, faint, have heart palpitations, cause seizures and even cause a heart attack. Not good ... not at all.
Here are some of the effects of bulimia. This is not a comprehensive list, though. Please check out the other sections here to read more detailed information on bulimia side effects and other eating disorder effects.
Gastric rupture from stuffing in too much food during a binge
Tears of the esophagus - from stomach acid due to vomitting and from food coming back up through the esophagus
Heartburn - due to the inability of the flap to close the esophagus from the stomach ... as a result of excessive vomiting
Electrolyte Imbalance - causing dehydration, dizziness, fainting, inability to concentrate, low blood sugar, heart palpitations, heart attack and even death
Just because you have side effects of bulimia, doesn't mean you can't reverse the effects. Get help now. You can recover.
